Dalí sculpture achieved an excellent result at the 20th Century & Contemporary Art sale at Christies Shanghai on 21st September 2018.
The museum bronze sculpture Surrealist Piano, 2 meters 49 cm in height, sculpture sold for over € 1 million euros, (9,000,000 CNY / € 1,117,648.)
In this sculpture, Dalí transforms the image of a grand piano into a surreal dancing object. The traditional wooden legs of the piano are replaced with actual female legs, in adding these unique, surprising features, Dali transforms the mundane and inanimate into an animated object, typical of Dali’s oeuvre. The result is a lively ensemble that can dance as well as play and which could only exist in Dali’s surreal universe.
The 20th Century & Contemporary Art sale has attracted interest and support from Mainland Chinese collectors since its inaugural auction in Shanghai in 2013.
A spokesperson for the Dalí Universe, who manages the largest collection of Dalí bronze sculptures in the world, commented:
“This fantastic auction result follows on from the successful sale of the Triumphant Elephant sculpture at this same auction house last year.”
